Hailing from Montreal, Canada, Lisa Shalom is a spoken word artist whose toes have tickled the globe. She was named the Sea Shepherd Conservation Society’s crewmember of the year in 2005 for her time spent crewing aboard the Ocean Warrior on a swashbuckling journey to defend marine wildlife in places ranging from New Zealand and Antarctica to the Galapagos Islands and Costa Rica and far beyond. She eventually learned to balance the demands of frontline activism with the healing arts and became a certified massage therapist and yoga teacher in the mid 2000s. Along the way, she wrote poetry as a means of processing the inner experience, and has performed at the Bowery Poetry Club (NYC), the Nuyorican (NYC), Bhaktifest (Joshua Tree), Unite in Babylon (Israel), Open Mind Festival (Quebec), Gratitudefest (LA) and more, both solo and as a part of various musical projects. With a particular interest in odd- time signature rhythms, much of Lisa’s poetry is set to complex and asymmetric music. Always one to openly share her findings, Lisa is the founder and creator of “Spoken Wordicine; Let Your Words Be Your Medicine” as well as “SWUPS (Spoken Wordicine Underground Poets Society)”. The former is an introductory six- week workshop designed to unearth our buried stories, massage them into poetry and give them wings to fly in a safe container. The latter is a deep dive into the power of authentic expression through the means of spoken word poetry.
